A sunny picnic is one of summer's great pleasures.
At Chapel Down, we believe the right wine can turn a good picnic into a great one. Whether you're stretching out on a blanket among our vines or setting up in your local park, our wines are on hand to elevate every outdoor occasion.
We've selected a few of our favourite wines that are perfect for al fresco sipping. Each one is produced here in Kent, making use of our unique terroir and winemaking tradition.
Chapel Down Brut
For a sparkling start, our Brut NV is a crisp, elegant choice. Made using the Traditional Method, it has fine bubbles and notes of apple, citrus and freshly baked bread. This wine brings brightness and energy to any picnic. Serve it well chilled and in proper glassware to fully enjoy its texture and aroma. A sparkling wine stopper can help keep the fizz going if you don't finish the bottle.
Pair with: Serve Chapel Down Brut as an aperitif to get things started, or with fish and chips on the beach.
Chapel Down Bacchus
Bacchus is one of our best-loved still wines, and it's ideal for summer drinking. Aromatic and zesty, it offers citrus, elderflower and grassy notes, often compared to Sauvignon Blanc. This wine pairs beautifully with fresh, light dishes and is easy to enjoy outdoors. Keep it in a cooler bag or on ice to maintain the perfect temperature.
Pair with: Goat's cheese tart, leafy green salads or cold roast chicken.
Chapel Down English Rose
With its soft pink colour and fresh berry aromas, our English Rosé captures the essence of summer. It's dry, fruit-forward and refreshing, making it a versatile picnic companion. This is a wine that looks as good as it tastes and adds a summery splash to any gathering.
Pair with: Mediterranean couscous, grilled vegetables or a tomato and mozzarella salad.
Chapel Down Rosé
For those looking to make their picnic feel a little more special, Chapel Down Rosé is a sparkling option that brings a refined finish to the experience. Crafted using the Traditional Method, it delivers delicate bubbles and red berry flavours with a crisp, clean profile. This wine offers freshness and depth without overpowering the food.
Pair with: Cold charcuterie, seafood skewers or fresh strawberries.
Helpful Tips for Outdoor Wine Enjoyment
Keep it cool: Chill your bottles in advance and transport them in an insulated bag or ice box to preserve their flavour and structure.
Mind the glassware: Use proper wine glasses where possible. They enhance aroma and taste and are more stable than disposable options.
Bring a stopper: If you don't finish the bottle, reseal it properly and store it cool. A sparkling wine stopper helps preserve fizz for up to 48 hours.
