Grape Variety

100% Pinot Blanc

The subtle, but highly versatile Pinot Blanc. Originating as a white grape mutation of Pinot Noir from Burgundy, Pinot Blanc is now most commonly grown in Alsace (France), Baden (Germany) and Lombardy (Italy). It is, however, a great match for the warmer areas of England. It thrives in relatively cool wine growing areas on limestone/clay mix soils, where it produces dry, refreshing still white wines, as well as being an excellent blending grape for sparklers. Think Franciacorta or Crémant.

VINEYARD

Kent (69%), Essex (31%)

On the Maldon Estate, Essex, grapes are grown on cordon and double guyot pruning systems, and on predominately clay soils. Whilst clay can create drainage issues within shallow sloped vineyards, the soil type's ability to retain nutrients ensures the Maldon Estate produces consistently high fruit quality, particularly of grape varieties like Pinot Blanc.

WINEMAKING

The Pinot Blanc grapes were whole bunch pressed, and only the best juice was used. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation. At Chapel Down, we utilise malolactic fermentation in order to convert tart malic acid into softer lactic acid for a variety of our white wines. This allows for additional velvety texture and body to be added to these wines, without overpowering signature floral or citrus aromas.
