Introducing the Judging Panel for Chapel Down's 'Taste of England' Competition

Earlier this year we announced a rare opportunity for upcoming chefs to gain national recognition and showcase the future of English cuisine through seasonality, provenance and creativity through our Taste of England competition. We're now pleased to introduce our judging panel.

David Ellis

David Ellis is a London-based journalist, writer and restaurant critic best known for his work at The London Standard. As the paper’s Going Out editor and restaurant critic, he covers the city’s food, nightlife and culture scene with a sharp but approachable style. His writing is known for balancing detailed criticism with humour and personality, making restaurant reviewing accessible to a wide audience. Passionate about London’s hospitality industry, he regularly highlights both iconic venues and new independent openings across the capital.

Jonathan Parker

Jonathan Parker is a hospitality executive and food & beverage specialist best known for his work at Ascot Racecourse. As Managing Director of 1711 by Ascot and Director of Food & Beverage, he oversees the racecourse’s world-renowned hospitality and dining operations, including Royal Ascot. Known for his leadership style and passion for guest experience, he has helped shape Ascot into one of Britain’s leading hospitality destinations. Before joining Ascot, he held senior roles at Chelsea FC and within the Compass Group hospitality business.

Jimi Famurewa

Jimi Famurewa is a British restaurant critic, writer and broadcaster known for his vibrant, insightful take on food and culture. He has written for major publications including the Evening Standard, where he previously served as chief restaurant critic. Alongside his journalism, he is a regular television and radio contributor, appearing on programmes and podcasts including MasterChef and Off Menu. Known for his warm, engaging style and sharp cultural commentary, his work often explores the connection between food, identity and modern city life.

Libby Brodie

Libby Brodie is a freelance wine critic and writer known for her approachable, engaging take on the world of wine and hospitality. Her work has appeared in publications including City A.M., Daily Mail, The Independent, Condé Nast Traveller and TheBuyer, among others. Writing about wine trends, producers, restaurants and food pairing with a clear and accessible style, she is passionate about making wine culture more inclusive and less intimidating. Her work often highlights emerging talent, sustainable winemaking and the evolving food and drink scene in the UK and beyond.

Josh Donaghay-Spire

Josh Donaghay-Spire is the Head Winemaker at Chapel Down, where he oversees the creation of the winery’s award-winning sparkling and still wines. He combines technical expertise with a strong focus on quality and innovation, helping to shape the brand’s modern approach to English winemaking. Passionate about the growth of the English wine industry, he is known for his hands-on approach and commitment to showcasing the potential of British vineyards. His work reflects both modern winemaking techniques and a deep understanding of England’s unique terroir.
