FAQs: Visiting Chapel Down – Everything You Need to Know

Visiting Chapel Down is a wonderful way to experience the beauty of the English countryside, taste award-winning wines, and enjoy a memorable day out. To help you plan your trip, we’ve gathered the most common visitor questions and turned them into a simple guide.

Are dogs allowed at Chapel Down? 

Yes, we welcome dogs on leads around the vineyard site and in our wine shop. However, dogs are not permitted in the restaurant or on guided tours. 

Can I bring children to Chapel Down? 

Children are welcome on site, but we do not recommend our guided tours for young children. You're more than welcome to enjoy a self-guided tasting or walk with your family. 

Can I leave my car overnight? 

Yes. You are welcome to leave your car overnight in our secure on-site car park if required. However, overnight stays in camper vans are not permitted. 

Is Chapel Down wheelchair accessible? 

Our shop and guided tours are fully accessible for wheelchair users. Please note that The Swan restaurant is not accessible, as it is located up a flight of 36 steps. 

Can I take the tour if I'm pregnant or don't drink alcohol? 

Absolutely. While we do not offer a discounted rate, we provide non-alcoholic alternatives during the tour, so you can still enjoy the full experience. 

Do you offer alcohol-free wines? 

We currently do not produce alcohol-free wines. 

Are Chapel Down wines vegan? 

Our wines are not vegan at this time. 

What footwear should I wear for the tour? 

We recommend sensible footwear. If you're joining us for a walking tour, wellies or walking boots are advised during the winter months. In drier seasons, standard comfortable shoes are suitable. 

What happens if it rains? 

Our tours go ahead in all weather conditions. We will adapt the format where necessary to ensure your comfort and safety. 

Do I need to book transport in advance? 

Yes, we strongly advise booking taxis both to and from Chapel Down in advance. Local transport options are very limited, particularly in rural Kent. 

How far is Chapel Down from the nearest train station? 

We are approximately 20 minutes by car from Headcorn Station and 30 minutes from Ashford International. 

How much walking is involved in the tour? 

The walking tour covers roughly 300 yards in total. The format includes several stops, typically four to five sections of standing for around ten minutes each. 

What time does Chapel Down close? 

  1. Winter: We close at 5 pm every day 

  1. Summer:  

  1. Sunday to Wednesday: 5 pm 

  1. Thursday to Saturday: 7.30 pm 

Is there a casual food option if I don't want formal dining? 

Yes. We offer a range of light bites, sandwiches and platters available from our shop—perfect for a more relaxed visit. 

How many wines do you taste on a regular tour? 

Our regular guided tours include five wine tastings, offering a chance to explore a range of Chapel Down still and sparkling wines. 

Do you have a shop on site? 

Yes. Our wine shop is open seven days a week, where you can taste and purchase our full range of wines and gifts. 

Can I visit without booking a tour? 

Yes, you're welcome to visit informally at any time. You can enjoy self-guided walks, informal tastings in our shop, and explore the vineyard at your own pace. 

Do you offer accommodation on-site? 

We do not currently offer accommodation at Chapel Down, but there are many local options in and around Tenterden if you're planning an overnight stay.
